Baby's Dry, Flaky Skin in Winter? Why It Happens — and a Gentle Routine That Helps

Baby's Dry, Flaky Skin in Winter? Why It Happens — and a Gentle Routine That Helps

If your little one's cheeks, arms or legs turn dry, rough or flaky the moment the weather cools, you're not imagining it — and you're far from alone. Winter is one of the most common times parents notice changes in their baby's skin. The good news: with the right gentle routine, soft, comfortable skin is very achievable.

Why baby skin gets dry in winter

A baby's skin barrier is around 20–30% thinner than an adult's, so it loses water more easily and is quicker to feel the effects of the environment. In winter, three things gang up on it:

  • Cold, dry outdoor air pulls moisture from the skin.
  • Indoor heating lowers humidity, drying skin further.
  • Frequent or long warm baths can strip the skin's natural oils.

The result is skin that looks dull or flaky and can feel tight — especially on the cheeks, elbows and knees.

A gentle winter routine for soft, comfortable skin

1. Keep baths short and warm (not hot)

Aim for 5–10 minutes in warm — not hot — water, and use a mild, sulphate-free cleanser so you're not stripping the skin. Janma's Head-to-Toe Foam Wash is tear-free and ultra-gentle, with soothing oat and aloe vera.

2. Moisturise within 3 minutes of the bath

This is the single most useful winter habit. Pat (don't rub) skin almost dry, then seal in moisture while it's still slightly damp. For everyday hydration, a lightweight lotion works beautifully; for very dry patches, a richer balm.

3. Layer for very dry skin

On rough cheeks, elbows or feet, apply the Hydrating & Soothing Lotion all over, then a touch of the richer Hydra Healing Moisturizing Balm on the driest spots.

How Janma helps

Janma's leave-on care is built around ingredients chosen for what they do — not for fragrance. The Hydra Healing Balm combines kokum butter, organic ghee, sweet almond oil and oat extract to flood dry skin with moisture and help seal it in, so the look of dryness and post-bath roughness eases and the skin's natural barrier is supported.

And because it's clinically (in-vivo) tested and made in our own GMP-certified facility, it's care you can feel — and that we can stand behind. It's hypoallergenic, dermatologically tested, and free from parabens, sulphates and silicones.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I moisturise my baby in winter?

Twice a day is a good baseline — once after the bath and once before bed — and more often on very dry areas as needed.

Is it normal for baby skin to flake in winter?

Mild dryness and occasional flaking are very common in cold weather and usually settle with a consistent gentle routine. If skin becomes very red, cracked, weepy or uncomfortable, or doesn't improve, please consult your paediatrician.

Can I use the same products on my own dry skin?

Yes — Janma is made for the whole family, so the balm is lovely on grown-up hands, elbows and heels too.

Janma is a cosmetic baby & junior skincare range, not a medicine. Individual results vary. For any diagnosed skin condition, please consult your paediatrician.
