They don't mean the same thing. That's the whole answer. "Organic" is about how the ingredients were farmed, and it usually comes with a certification someone has audited. "Natural" is about where an ingredient started life — and in India, no law pins that word down. A brand can print it on almost anything. One claim gets checked. The other mostly doesn't.

For an ingredient to be genuinely organic, the plant it came from was grown without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilisers or GMOs, on land managed to a defined standard — and ideally that whole chain was certified by an independent body. Natural is about origin, loosely. It usually means an ingredient started out as a plant, a mineral, something non-synthetic. A product can be 95% water and synthetic emulsifier, hold one drop of aloe, and still say "with natural aloe" across the front. "Natural" tells you a story. "Certified organic" makes a claim someone can be held to.
What does "organic" actually require — and who checks it?
Here the two words split for good. "Organic" on a properly certified product means the brand had to prove something to an outsider: where the ingredients came from, a minimum percentage of organic content, restricted processing, often packaging and traceability rules on top. - Sensible preservation — a "100% preservative-free natural" product in a humid Mumbai bathroom can grow mould fast. A safe, well-chosen preservative is the gentler choice.
So when a brand leads with "natural" but won't show you the full ingredient list, the pH, or any skin testing — that's the bottle I put back.
Organic or natural — which should I actually buy?
Stop choosing between the two words. Use them as tie-breakers, after you've checked the things that genuinely land on your baby's skin. The order I'd actually shop in:
- Read the full ingredient (INCI) list, not the front. The back panel is the contract; the front is the ad.
- Match the product to your baby's age and need. A barrier balm for dry, sensitive patches is a different job from a daily wash.
- Look for skin testing. "Dermatologically tested" / in-vivo tested beats "goodness of nature" every time.
- Then prefer certified organic over uncertified "natural" — if the formula already passed the checks above, an audited organic source is a genuine bonus.
- Check where and how it's made. A brand that owns its facility and can show its process has less to hide than a white-label.
