Why the front of the pack is the least useful part
A baby's skin is thinner and more permeable than yours — by roughly 20-30% — so more of what you apply gets through, and the barrier is still learning to hold water in. That's why label-reading matters more here than on your own face cream. And almost none of that risk is dealt with by the big words on the front.
"Natural." "Gentle." "No nasties." "Chemical-free." In India, most of these front-of-pack words aren't legally defined for cosmetics, so a brand can print them without anyone checking. "Chemical-free" is my personal pet peeve — water is a chemical. So is vitamin E. So is every safe, tested ingredient in a good formula. The phrase tells you nothing, except that someone in marketing thinks it sells. Treat the front as a headline, not evidence.
Step 1: Read the ingredient list — and read it in order
Flip to the ingredient list (often headed INCI — the international naming system). The order isn't random. Ingredients run from most to least, by amount, down to about 1% concentration — below that, they can appear in any order. So the first five names tell you what the product mostly is. For a lotion or wash, water (Aqua) usually leads, followed by the main emollients, humectants and cleansers.
What I actually hunt for in those first few lines: a recognisable moisturiser doing the heavy lifting — glycerin, a plant butter, a well-studied oil — and, crucially, a preservative somewhere in the list. Parents often panic at preservatives. But a water-based baby product without one is a mould risk, not a purity badge. Step 3: The boring legal print that actually protects you
This is the part I care about most, and it's usually the smallest text on the pack. Under Indian labelling rules, a properly made cosmetic has to tell you who made it and let you trace it. If a product won't, that's a real red flag — louder than any ingredient debate.
- Manufacturer name and address — an actual company, an actual place. "Marketed by" alone isn't the same as who made it.
- Manufacturing licence number (for cosmetics made in India) — or importer details and country of origin if it's imported.
- Batch / Lot number — so a specific run can be traced or recalled.
- Manufacturing date and Best-before / Use-by — baby skin is no place for an expired preservative system.
- Net quantity, MRP and consumer-care contact — basic, but a serious brand always includes them.
When you know a product is made in the brand's own GMP-certified facility rather than white-labelled by an unnamed third party, this whole section reads cleaner. One accountable maker sits behind the licence number, not a mystery. That's the difference between a brand that owns its formula and one that just prints its logo on someone else's.
Step 4: Read the symbols, not just the words
Two little pictures do a lot of work. The open-jar symbol — a small tub with a number like 12M or 6M — is the Period After Opening: how many months the product stays good once you've opened it, separate from the printed expiry. Write the date you opened it on the base with a marker. I do this at home, and it settles a lot of "is this still okay?" doubts. When to see a doctor
Label-reading helps you choose well, but it doesn't replace a paediatrician. If your baby's skin is broken, weeping, bleeding, spreading redness, or comes with fever or a rash that won't settle — or if a product triggers a reaction that doesn't calm within a day or two of stopping it — see your paediatrician or a dermatologist rather than swapping to yet another bottle. A persistent or worsening skin problem is a medical question, not a shopping one.
