It's 4pm in Nagpur, the sun is still hammering the playground, and your eight-year-old walks in with pink, warm cheeks after "just an hour" of cricket. So you wonder: have you been too relaxed about sunscreen? Or is the bottle you bought even doing anything?

The short version: the things that actually matter are a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with a PA+++ rating, put on generously about 15–20 minutes before going out, topped up every two hours (and after sweating or swimming), plus shade, a hat and covering clothes between roughly 10am and 4pm. The rest is detail. In India, though, the detail is where parents trip up — our UV index runs high almost the whole year, not just in May.

What are the real non-negotiables for kids' sun protection?

Strip away the marketing and four things matter, in this order:

  1. Timing and shade. The cheapest, most effective sun protection is simply not being in direct sun at peak hours. Push outdoor play to before 10am or after 4pm wherever you can.
  2. Physical cover. A wide-brim hat, sunglasses and light full-sleeve cotton block far more UV than any cream. A plain cotton t-shirt does about as much as a low SPF on its own.
  3. Broad-spectrum sunscreen on the bits clothing can't cover: face, ears, neck, hands, the back of the legs.
  4. Reapplication. One morning swipe is not a full day of protection. Almost everyone skips this step, and skipping it quietly undoes the rest.

So sunscreen sits third on that list. I'm a cosmetic scientist; I'll happily talk formulation all day. But no SPF number rescues a child standing in full noon sun in a vest. The cream is the final layer over good habits, not a substitute for them.

Does Indian weather actually change the rules?

Yes, and it's where a lot of advice written for cooler countries stops working for us. Much of India sits close to the tropics, so the sun is more directly overhead and UV stays strong across seasons. A few honest, India-specific judgement calls:

  • Summer (the obvious one). UV turns brutal from late morning. Here shade, reapplication and a hat really are non-negotiable, not extras.
  • Monsoon. This one catches parents out. A grey, cloudy Mumbai or Pune sky still lets plenty of UV through. Clouds scatter visible light, so it feels cooler, but they don't block UVA well. Kids still need protection on those overcast play days.
  • Winter. The air is cooler and skin tends to be drier, yet the sun on a clear December afternoon can still redden young skin over a long match or picnic.

Don't read it as "summer means sunscreen." Read it as: any daylight spent outdoors needs sun protection, scaled to how long they're out and how strong the sun is that day.

How much sunscreen, and how often? (the part everyone gets wrong)

From the lab side, here's what bites people. An SPF 50 spread on in a thin, stingy layer can behave like an SPF 15 on the skin. That number on the bottle is measured at a generous coat most of us never actually apply.

A practical guide for a child's exposed skin:

  • Face, ears and neck: about a finger-length of cream squeezed onto your fingertip.
  • Each arm: roughly another finger-length; each leg a bit more.
  • Apply 15–20 minutes before stepping out, so it settles into an even film.
  • Reapply every 2 hours of outdoor time, and straight after swimming, heavy sweating or towel-drying — even "water-resistant" formulas wear off.
  • Mind the spots that get missed: ear tips, the parting in the hair, the tops of feet in sandals.
A simple trick for school sports days: send a small sunscreen with your child's name on it and ask them to reapply at the lunch break. A morning-only application rarely survives a full day outdoors.

Mineral vs chemical sunscreen for kids — which is better?

Both protect well when they're formulated and used properly. What differs is how they work, and for young, reactive skin that's worth understanding.

Where I land: for most young children, and for anyone with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, a mineral sunscreen is the lower-drama choice. That slight white cast is a small trade for a filter that's less likely to sting eyes or react. For an active older kid who'll refuse anything chalky, a well-made broad-spectrum chemical or hybrid is perfectly fine.

SPF and PA — what the numbers actually mean

SPF measures protection against UVB, the rays mainly behind sunburn. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB; SPF 50, around 98%. Going from 30 to 50 is a real but small gain, which is exactly why how you apply beats chasing SPF 100.

The PA rating (PA+ to PA++++) measures UVA protection — the deeper-penetrating rays linked to long-term skin damage. Indian parents often skip past this one, and honestly it may be the more important number here, because UVA stays strong through clouds and glass and across every season. Look for the word "broad-spectrum" alongside at least PA+++. A high SPF with no UVA protection is doing half the job.

Building a sun-smart routine your kid will actually follow

Protection only works if it happens daily without a battle. So keep it boringly simple:

  • Morning: after the usual wash and moisturiser, sunscreen on the face, ears, neck and hands before school or play.
  • Bag: a hat and a small sunscreen tube live permanently in the school or sports bag.
  • Midday: reapply at lunch on long outdoor days.
  • Evening: a gentle cleanse to lift off sunscreen and sweat, then moisturise — sun and outdoor air leave skin dry.

A bad sunburn on a child — redness with pain, blistering, fever or chills — is a burn, not a tan that will "settle." Keep them out of the sun, cool the skin gently and check in with a doctor (see below).

When to see a doctor

Most mild redness from too much sun settles with shade, cool compresses and gentle moisturising. See a paediatrician if your child has:

  • Blistering, widespread or deep redness, or a burn over a large area.
  • Fever, chills, headache, vomiting or unusual drowsiness after sun exposure.
  • Signs of dehydration — very little urine, dry mouth, lethargy.
  • A sunburn in a baby under one year (always check with a doctor).
  • Any new or changing mole or spot that worries you.

After a long day in the sun
