Six in the evening, middle of a Nagpur May. You collect her from the pool, hair dripping, that deep-end smell on her. It dries in the car. And down near the ends there's a cast that wasn't there in March. Not quite green. More the colour of a khaki school skirt held up to the light.
That tint is copper. Not chlorine. Copper dissolved in the pool water binds to your child's hair and oxidises into a green-blue compound, the same way a brass door handle goes green in the monsoon. Chlorine does have a role, but an indirect one. It roughens the outer layer of the hair so the copper has somewhere to stick, and it keeps the copper in the oxidised form that shows colour.

Where the copper comes from
Two sources. Both are ordinary in Indian pools.
The first is algaecide. Warm, sunlit water is a gift to algae, and by April the operator is fighting it daily. Through to June, then again in the sticky weeks after the first rains, the dosing goes up to stop the water turning. The cheap workhorse is copper sulphate or a chelated copper compound. It works. It also leaves free copper ions in the water long after the algae are dead.
The second is the plumbing itself, and this is the one nobody expects. Let the pool's pH drift acidic, which happens quickly in an outdoor pool in peak summer with heavy chlorination and a heavy bather load, and the water starts eating copper out of the pipework, the pump housings, any heat exchanger. That copper goes straight into the water your child is swimming in.
Which is why the green shows up when it does: the tail of summer, and the warm humid stretches when algae pressure is highest.
Then what is chlorine doing?
Chlorine is an oxidiser. It swells and lifts the cuticle, the overlapping scales on the outside of each hair, and it oxidises some of the sulphur bonds and amino acids in the keratin underneath. What you're left with is hair carrying more negatively charged binding sites and more open channels than it had before. Porous hair.
Copper ions carry a positive charge. Porous, oxidised, negatively charged hair is close to a perfect trap for them. Once bound, the copper oxidises into a green-tinged compound that sits in the shaft. Verdigris on brass, happening on your child's ponytail.

Why it shows on some kids and not others
Three things decide it. How much your child swims isn't one of them.
Porosity. Hair that is already rough grabs copper faster. Sun-bleached ends after a summer of outdoor games. Heat-styled hair on an older child. Hair washed for years in hard water. Ends are always worse than roots, because the ends are older and have taken more abuse.
Base colour. Most Indian children's hair is dark and dense with eumelanin, and a light copper load on it is simply invisible. It shows on sun-lightened ends, on naturally lighter brown, on henna'd lengths, on fine or thin hair. If your child has thick jet-black hair and you can still see green, the copper level in that pool is high.
Length and time in the water. Long hair left loose for two hours, five days a week, picks up far more than a cropped head under a swim cap.
The sixty seconds before she gets in
Hair behaves like a sponge. A dry sponge takes up whatever it touches first. A sponge already full of clean water takes up much less. So wet your child's hair through at the poolside shower before she gets in, properly saturated, not a quick splash. The shaft then has far less room left for pool water and the copper in it.
Then give it a sacrificial layer. Conditioners work through cationic ingredients, things like behentrimonium chloride or cetrimonium chloride, along with fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol. Cationic means positively charged. They go looking for the same damaged, negatively charged sites on the hair that copper wants. Get there first and the parking spaces are taken. A thin film combed through dry-ish hair before a swim really does cut how much metal binds.
- Wet the hair through with clean water at the shower — count to sixty.
- Work a small amount of conditioner through the lengths and ends. Don't rinse it out.
- Comb it into a plait or bun; a silicone cap over that if your child tolerates one.
- Straight after: rinse with clean water within about ten minutes, before it dries.
- Shampoo, then re-condition. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward.
The post-swim shampoo matters less than people think, as long as it's mild and you actually do it. A harsh, high-sulphate wash on hair that is already oxidised strips lipids and pushes porosity higher, which sets you up for more copper tomorrow. Getting the green out once it's there
The copper is bound. Water won't shift it, and more shampoo won't either. You either grab the metal with a chelator or you reduce it chemically.
A chelating wash. Read the label for tetrasodium EDTA, sodium phytate or phytic acid. These are claw-shaped molecules that wrap around metal ions and take them down the drain. Plenty of ordinary shampoos already carry a little EDTA to handle hard-water minerals; a dedicated clarifying wash simply carries more of it. Once a week through swim season is plenty. More often than that on a child's hair is over-cleansing.
An ascorbic acid rinse. Crush two plain vitamin C tablets into about half a mug of water. Pour it through wet hair, leave it two to three minutes, rinse well, then condition. Ascorbic acid reduces copper and weakly chelates it, and it's mildly acidic, which also helps the cuticle lie flat. Keep it well away from the eyes, and skip it entirely if the scalp is broken or irritated.
And the water at home
Pools take the blame, but a lot of Indian households are running a slower version of the same reaction. Copper geyser elements, copper supply lines, an overhead tank sitting at 45°C on the terrace: all of them put trace metal into bath water. Borewell water across much of central and western India is hard, calcium and magnesium, and those ions do their own damage. They react with soap to leave a dull film, and they leave the hair rougher and more porous over time. Rougher hair binds more copper. It compounds.
None of this needs a filtration project. Rinse from stored, settled water rather than straight off a hot rooftop line, and use conditioner at every wash instead of when you remember. Coating the hair after every wash is the cheapest defence there is against hard water and pool metal both. When to see a doctor
Green hair is cosmetic. It isn't an illness and it isn't dangerous. But see your paediatrician or a dermatologist if your child has a persistently itchy, flaking or red scalp after swimming, any rash or hives that appear reliably after pool days, sore or weepy patches along the hairline, or noticeable hair thinning or breakage over a few weeks. Those point to irritation, sensitivity or a scalp condition. Separate problems, and they need a proper look rather than a clarifying wash.

The bigger win is soaking the hair with clean tap water for a full sixty seconds beforehand and combing conditioner through the lengths, so the shaft is already saturated and coated when your child gets in.
Will baking soda or ketchup fix green hair?
No. Baking soda is alkaline, so it swells the cuticle further open — exactly the wrong direction for porous hair, and it makes future copper binding easier. Ketchup is just mild acid with sugar and salt attached. Purple or ash toning shampoos only optically cancel the green while the metal stays put. A chelating wash is the one that actually removes copper.
Can hard tap water at home cause green hair too?
Home water rarely produces visible green, but it contributes. Copper geyser elements, copper supply lines and hot rooftop tanks add trace metal, while hard borewell water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits that roughen hair. Rougher, more porous hair binds pool copper faster. Rinsing from settled stored water and conditioning after every wash both reduce the effect.
