Here's the rule I give parents: the two-finger rule for the face and neck. Squeeze a line of sunscreen along your index and middle fingers, full length, the two together — that comes to about half a teaspoon, and it's the right amount for a child's face, ears and neck. How often should kids reapply sunscreen?

Sunscreen comes off. It rubs onto shirt collars and car seats, sweats away in a Nagpur afternoon, rinses off in the pool. Nothing — mineral or chemical — "lasts all day." The honest rule is every two hours of outdoor time, and immediately after:

  • Swimming or a water fight — even "water-resistant" formulas are only tested for 40 or 80 minutes in water.
  • Towel-drying — a towel literally scrubs the film off.
  • Heavy sweating during sport or play.

One thing worth getting straight: a second coat doesn't add SPF numbers together. Another layer of SPF 40 isn't SPF 80. It just brings you back up to where you started once the first layer has thinned. You're topping up, not stacking.

Mornings are chaos — I know. The one habit that actually holds is the before-school coat at home, then one refill at lunch kept in the school bag: a stick or small tube the child can manage on their own. Two decent applications beat one perfect one you can't repeat.

School day vs pool day vs a quick errand: what we'd actually do

"How much and how often" doesn't have one answer — it really does depend on the day. Here's an honest look at the three days Indian parents ask me about most, and what I'd do in each.

SPF 30 or 50? Mineral or chemical? Don't overthink the number

This is where parents freeze, so I'll just say it plainly. For everyday Indian sun, broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 with a PA rating of at least PA+++ is what you want. SPF measures UVB, the burning rays; the PA rating measures UVA — the deeper rays linked to long-term skin damage — and in our climate the PA rating earns its place right next to the SPF number. A bottle boasting a big SPF and no PA rating is telling you half the story.

Past SPF 50, the real-world gain is tiny. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB; SPF 50 about 98%. That step is nothing next to the gap between "applied too thin" and "applied properly." So pick a number in that band and spend your effort on amount and reapplication.

Cloth doesn't wear off at the two-hour mark. The part to hold on to: sunscreen is the backup for the skin you couldn't cover.
