What does "preservative-free" really mean?
It's a lovely line to print on the front of a pack. It's also one of the most misread. In practice it means one of three quite different things:
- There's genuinely no water to protect. An oil, a true balm, or an anhydrous butter has such low water activity that microbes can't easily grow.
