A mum wrote to me last month, worried. Her nine-year-old had the same window seat every day — a 40-minute ride to school, 40 back — and over one Nagpur summer the right side of his face had gone a visible shade darker than the left. She'd assumed a shut window kept the sun out. It doesn't. Not the way most of us picture it.

The short answer: ordinary window glass blocks nearly all of the sunburn rays (UVB), but it lets a large share of UVA straight through. And UVA is the wavelength that tans, pigments and ages skin. Window seat, long ride, sun on that side of the bus — that's real sun exposure, shut window and all. Whether it's worth daily sunscreen depends on the seat, the ride and the light. Does UVA really come through a school bus window?

Yes. This is physics, not a marketing line. Clear window glass — a bus side window, your car door, a classroom pane — absorbs almost all UVB (roughly 290–320 nm, the rays that redden and burn). That's the whole reason you don't get sunburnt sitting behind glass.

UVA is a different story. UVA (320–400 nm), and especially the deeper long-UVA, passes through ordinary glass in large amounts. Laminated glass — the kind used in car windscreens — blocks far more of it, thanks to a plastic layer sandwiched inside. Side windows, rear windows and standard bus windows have no such layer. They're plain tempered glass. UVA sails through.

Dermatologists have known this for years from the people who drive a lot: more ageing and pigmentation on the side of the face nearest the window. A child glued to a bus window every morning is the same problem, smaller and slower.

If there's no sunburn, why does it even matter?

Fair question. It's the one that trips most parents up. We're all taught to read sun exposure off the skin — red, sore, peeling. UVA does none of that. It doesn't sting. It doesn't announce itself. It just works quietly, over months and years, in three ways:

  • Tanning and pigmentation. UVA triggers melanin, which is why one cheek slowly deepens in tone. On Indian skin, which pigments readily, that feeds patchy tanning and dark spots.
  • Photo-ageing. UVA reaches the deeper dermis and breaks down collagen over time. It's the main driver of premature skin ageing. Nobody's worried about wrinkles on a child today — this is a lifetime dose that starts now.
  • It adds up. A childhood of small, unnoticed exposures matters more for long-term skin health than the odd big beach day.

So does my child actually need sunscreen for the bus ride?

Honestly? It depends. I'd rather give you a real answer than a blanket "always." Here's how I'd think it through:

  • Window seat, on the sunny side, long ride (20+ minutes each way): yes, protect it. This is the exact setup that produced the darker-on-one-side face.
  • Aisle seat, short ride, or an overcast monsoon morning? The bus ride on its own barely moves the needle. Don't lose sleep over it in isolation.
  • And here's the thing — if there's outdoor assembly, PT, a games period or even a walk from the gate, the bus is almost beside the point. That child needs daily sunscreen regardless. The ride is just one more reason.

You're not adding a step for the bus. You're just making sure that one daily application is broad-spectrum. A quick way to know which side needs the most cover: ask your child which hand they'd use to touch the window from their usual seat. That's the side of the face, ear and forearm getting the UVA — and the spot most parents forget.

What should I put on, and when?

Timing matters as much as the product. Sunscreen isn't instant — it needs a few minutes to settle into a proper film. Slap it on at the bus stop, let your child rub a cheek against a bag strap, and half of it is gone before the bus arrives.

  • Apply 15–20 minutes before leaving — part of getting dressed, not a scramble at the gate.
  • Use enough: for a child's face, neck and ears, think roughly two finger-lengths of product. Thin, stingy layers under-deliver on the label's protection.

  • Choose broad-spectrum with a PA rating — that's your UVA insurance. The SPF number alone won't cut it here.
  • For sensitive young skin, a mineral (zinc oxide) filter sits on top of the skin, is gentle, and starts working the moment it's on.
