Hard Water vs Pool Water: What's Damaging Kids' Hair?

A mother in Nagpur sent me a photo in June. Her seven-year-old's plait, half dry, standing away from the head like coir rope. Three swim classes a week, and she wanted to know whether to blame the pool or the borewell water at home. Both, and not in the same way. Pool chlorine does the fast, visible damage, and hard water does the slow damage that never stops. Most Indian kids who swim are getting both, because the shower they rinse the chlorine off in is usually hard too.

Which one matters more depends on your child. Six weeks of summer-camp swimming and hair that turned rough overnight? Blame the pool. Dull, gritty hair ever since you moved into the building with the borewell connection, swimming or not? That's your bathroom tap. What does hard water actually do to my child's hair?

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as groundwater moves through limestone. Past roughly 120 ppm it gets called hard, and a great deal of Indian borewell supply sits well above that. Summer is usually worse, when municipal lines are topped up from bores.

The bit nobody explains at the salon is what happens next. Most cleansers use anionic surfactants, meaning negatively charged molecules, whether the base is a true soap or a sulfate. In hard water, calcium and magnesium ions swap themselves in for the sodium on those molecules and form an insoluble salt. Lime soap. It is the grey ring in your bucket and the film on the tiles, and it settles on hair the same way, sitting on the cuticle in a layer that ordinary rinsing will not shift.

So the hair feels coated rather than clean. Dull root to tip. Gritty under a comb. Oddly heavy when it dries. And the shampoo barely foams, so you pour a second palmful, then a third, which mostly makes more scum. This is why a herbal soap bar that behaves beautifully on Mumbai's supply turns hair to straw on a Jaipur borewell. The bar didn't change. The water did.

About the evidence. The published work on hard water and hair is smaller and messier than the internet suggests. What holds up across studies is the mineral deposit and the rise in friction, not dramatic, sudden breakage. The breakage comes later, when a child drags a comb through hair that has lost its slip.

What does pool chlorine do that hard water doesn't?

Chlorine doesn't coat hair. It oxidises it, which is a completely different insult.

Every healthy hair carries a covalently bound fatty acid layer on its outer surface, 18-MEA if you want the term. One molecule thick, and the reason healthy hair repels water and slides against itself. Free chlorine, kept in most pools at around 1–3 ppm, oxidises that layer away. The fibre flips from water-repellent to water-loving. Friction climbs, strands grab each other, and by evening there are knots at the nape that weren't there yesterday. Push further and the oxidation reaches the disulfide bonds inside the fibre, converting them to cysteic acid, which leaves the hair more porous and more negatively charged.

That charge explains something parents notice and then talk themselves out of. Conditioner really does feel like it's doing more on swim days. Conditioning agents are positively charged, so they bind hardest exactly where the damage is. Not your imagination.

Then there is the soaking. Hair swells as it absorbs water, the cuticle scales lift while it's wet, and an hour in the pool five times a week is a lot of swell-and-dry cycling. The pool smell, by the way, isn't chlorine at all. It's chloramines, formed when chlorine meets sweat, urine and sunscreen. Those are the ones that sting eyes and scalp, and they cling to hair until the next wash.

How do I tell which one we're dealing with?

Look at your taps. Then look at the hair. The pattern gives it away.

What actually fixes it — starting tonight?

The most useful trick costs nothing. Saturate the hair with clean tap water before your child gets into the pool. A strand already full of water cannot take in much pool water. Sixty seconds under the changing-room tap does more than any expensive swim serum. Add a smear of conditioner over the lengths, pull the cap on over it, and leave it there. A physical barrier and a chemical one.

  • Soak hair in clean water for a full 60 seconds before the pool.
  • Smooth a coin-sized blob of conditioner through the lengths, then pull on the swim cap. Leave it in.
  • Rinse within 15 minutes of getting out — the changing-room tap is enough.
  • Shampoo once, at the scalp only. Let the lather run down the lengths on its way out.
  • Conditioner on mid-lengths and ends, two minutes, then rinse with the coolest water your child will tolerate.
  • Detangle wet, with conditioner still in, from the ends upwards, using a wide-tooth comb.
  • Blot with a cotton T-shirt instead of scrubbing with a terry towel.
  • Let it dry loose. Never plait or tie damp hair.

Now the products, since this is my day job. A shampoo wants a mild surfactant system built around gentle co-surfactants rather than a true soap base, because soap is the worst possible choice in hard water. Look for a chelator too: disodium EDTA, sodium phytate, sometimes sodium gluconate. It sits near the bottom of the ingredient list and gets no marketing attention, and it is the ingredient quietly binding calcium and magnesium so the cleanser can lather and rinse away clean. A conditioner wants cationic conditioning agents, behentrimonium methosulfate or cetrimonium chloride, plus fatty alcohols like cetearyl alcohol. Those are what restore slip to a fibre that has lost its own. And a light dimethicone is not the villain the internet says it is. It measurably lowers the force needed to pull a comb through, which means fewer snapped hairs at 8am. Do we need a shower filter or a water softener?

They do two different jobs, and most families buy the wrong one.

Shower filters, whether KDF media or vitamin C cartridges, reduce free chlorine in tap water reasonably well. They do almost nothing about calcium and magnesium, whatever the box shows. Only ion exchange, meaning a proper resin softener with a salt regeneration cycle, actually reduces hardness. That means plumbing, space and upkeep. The little screw-on "softener" cartridges with coloured beads exhaust within weeks.

My view, for what it's worth: for one child swimming twice a week, the routine above beats any hardware you can buy. If everyone in the house has rough hair and tight, itchy skin year-round and your taps are furred with scale, softening the bathroom line is a legitimate spend. Treat it as a household decision, though, not a hair product.

Please don't reach for adult clarifying or chelating shampoos on a young child's scalp, and skip the lemon and vinegar rinses doing the rounds on Instagram. They're acidic, they sting badly in chlorine-irritated eyes, and they have no business on skin that's already been in a pool for an hour.

When to see a doctor

Rough, dry, tangled hair after swimming is cosmetic, and it responds to a routine. Book an appointment with your paediatrician or a dermatologist if you see any of these instead:

  • An itchy, flaking scalp that hasn't settled after two weeks of gentle washing.
  • Round patches of hair loss, or short broken stubs in one area.
  • Painful, boggy, oozing or crusted spots on the scalp.
  • Sudden shedding all over, rather than gradual thinning.
  • Ear pain, discharge or muffled hearing after swimming — that one needs a doctor, not a conditioner.

None of these come from hard water or pool chlorine, which is why they need looking at properly rather than another change of shampoo.

Does chlorine cause hair loss in children?

Chlorine damages the hair shaft, not the follicle, so it doesn't cause true hair loss. What parents see is breakage — hairs snapping mid-length because they've lost their slip and get combed roughly while wet. That looks like thinning but grows back. Round bald patches, broken stubs in one spot or sudden all-over shedding are different, and need a paediatrician or dermatologist.

Can hard water cause hair fall in kids?

Not directly. Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on the hair surface, which raises friction and makes hair rough, dull and hard to comb. The hairs that come out are usually breaking during detangling rather than falling from the root. Fix the combing routine — conditioner in, wide-tooth comb, ends upward — and the shedding you see in the bathroom usually drops noticeably.

Does a swim cap actually protect hair from chlorine?

Partly. No cap is watertight on a wriggling child, so water always gets in. What a cap does well is reduce how much pool water flows through the hair. It works far better when you wet the hair thoroughly and add conditioner first — hair already saturated with clean water and coated with conditioner absorbs much less chlorinated water underneath the cap.

Should my child shampoo every single day after swimming?

Rinse every time, shampoo most times. A thorough plain-water rinse within about 15 minutes removes the bulk of the chlorine. If your child swims daily, use a mild shampoo at the scalp only and always follow with conditioner on the lengths. Skipping shampoo entirely on alternate days is fine for older kids with long, dry hair, as long as the rinse happens.

Is a vinegar or lemon rinse safe for kids' hair in hard water?

I don't recommend it for children. Acidic rinses do dissolve some mineral film, but they sting badly in eyes already irritated by pool chloramines, and they're easy to over-concentrate at home. A shampoo formulated with a chelator such as disodium EDTA or sodium phytate does the same job, at a controlled level, without the risk near eyes and skin.

Why does my child's hair feel worse after swimming than it looks?

Because chlorine strips the fatty layer on the outside of each strand before there's anything visible to see. That layer is one molecule thick and provides the slip. Once it's oxidised away, hair catches on itself immediately — you feel the drag under your fingers days before the ends start looking dry or brassy. Trust your hands over the mirror here.
