Two bags leave Indian homes every holiday season: one for the hills, one for the coast. The sunscreen goes into exactly one of them.
It belongs in both. And if you made me choose, I'd pack the hill bag first. UV climbs with altitude, and cold mountain air takes away the one warning signal parents actually rely on — that prickly warmth that says enough. At the beach, danger looks like danger, so families over-prepare. In Manali, in a fleece, nobody gives it a thought until a nose starts peeling on day three.

Myth: "It's cold up there, he won't burn"
Temperature and UV are barely related. Heat is infrared. Sunburn is ultraviolet. A 14°C morning in Gulmarg can put more erythemal UV on your child's cheeks than a 40°C afternoon in Nagpur.
Two things stack in the mountains. There's less atmosphere overhead to scatter and absorb UVB, so intensity climbs measurably with every thousand metres you gain. Manali sits around 2,000 m. Gulmarg is higher still. Then there's reflection: fresh snow bounces back a very large proportion of the UV that lands on it, far more than any other surface a family stands on, and that light arrives from below. Under the chin. Under the nose, inside the nostrils. The underside of the ears. The strip of eyelid the sunglasses don't cover.
Which is why hill-station sunburn looks so strange — an angry chin, and a clean white line where the cap sat. Those upward-facing angles are the ones from our piece on the sunscreen spots parents always miss. On snow they count double.
Myth: "She's under the umbrella, she's fine"
Shade helps. I'd never talk a parent out of it. But an umbrella intercepts the direct beam from the sun's disc and nothing else. A big share of the UV reaching your child at the beach is diffuse — scattered by the whole dome of open sky, then reflected back up off dry sand and sea foam. Dry sand reflects a meaningful share of UV back upward. Wet, foamy surf reflects more. Under an umbrella at Gokarna, a child is still collecting a meaningful dose from three directions.
So use shade to cut the peak, not to replace sunscreen. A rash guard — a full-sleeve swim tee — does more than any umbrella. Fabric never needs reapplying and doesn't wash off in the water.
Myth: "Water-resistant means it stays put"
Most holiday sunburn starts right here, with a label parents read too generously.
Water resistance is a tested claim with a number behind it: how much SPF the product retains after 40 minutes or 80 minutes of immersion. That's the whole claim. Nothing is waterproof. Nothing survives a full beach day. And immersion is the gentle test — what really destroys the film is mechanical. A brisk towel-dry lifts almost the entire layer off. Sand is a fine abrasive, so a child rolling in it is being buffed. Sweat on a Kodaikanal trek loosens adhesion from underneath.
My job on the bench is to build a film that survives all of that — water-resistant polymers and film formers that keep mineral particles evenly spread and anchored while the water phase evaporates. There's a trade-off buried in it. The properties that make a film cling also make it feel heavier, which is why a good beach sunscreen and a good everyday face sunscreen are rarely the same tube.
The rule I give parents: towel, then reapply. Not "sometime after the swim". Every time the towel comes out.

One hills-specific thing nobody packs for: the drive up. Four hours on a ghat road with sun coming through the side window is real UVA exposure. Ordinary glass filters UVB well and UVA poorly. Same physics as sunscreen, window glass and UVA on the school bus, just for four hours instead of twenty minutes.
What I look at on a holiday sunscreen label
Four things, in this order:
- Filter type. For children I stay with mineral — zinc oxide, or zinc with titanium dioxide. It sits on the surface and scatters and absorbs UV instead of being absorbed into skin, which makes it the pragmatic choice for sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Non-nano grades matter here.
- The PA rating, not just the SPF. SPF is UVB — the burn you can see coming. PA is UVA, the quieter damage that comes through car glass and on a flat, overcast hill morning. PA+++ is a solid broad-spectrum working level for a child.
- Vehicle and rheology. A thin, watery gel spreads beautifully and leaves a thinner film. Lovely for school mornings. Weak for a beach. On holiday I want a slightly heavier cream that holds its thickness.
- What I leave on the shelf: alcohol-heavy aerosol sprays — one gust and half of it never lands, so the dose becomes guesswork — and anything perfumed enough to sting a sweaty, salt-cracked face.
White cast deserves an honest word, since it's the real reason nobody reapplies at 2pm. A well-milled mineral formula with the right dispersion is nowhere near as ghostly as the chalky ones people remember. The holiday routine, in practice
- First layer in the hotel room, 15 minutes before you leave. Indoors, dry skin, no rush.
- Two finger-lengths per arm and per leg, a generous blob for face and neck. Under-application is the single most common reason SPF underperforms.
- On snow, do the upward-facing spots on purpose: under the chin, under the nose, ear rims, lower lip with an SPF balm.
- Set a phone alarm for the two-hourly reapply. Nobody remembers on a holiday.
- Reapply after every towel-dry, every swim, every sweaty climb.
- Cap, sunglasses, rash guard — on before sunscreen becomes the only defence.
- Wash off sand and salt in the evening with a gentle cleanser, then moisturise while the skin is still damp.
If two-hourly reapplication sounds unrealistic, that's a fair instinct — we've said as much in what reapplying actually looks like when you're not standing next to your child. On holiday you usually are. It's the easiest time of year to get this right.
The hill-station problem nobody packs for: wind
Sunburn gets the attention. Windburn ruins the photographs. Cold, dry, fast-moving air at altitude pulls water out of the stratum corneum quickly, and children lose it faster than we do — a baby's skin is 20–30% thinner than an adult's. By day two you'll see it: red, tight, slightly raw cheeks, and a chapped ring around the mouth on any child who licks their lips.
What helps is a physical seal, not more water. At night, and again before the morning trek, put something occlusive on cheeks, nose bridge and lips. A balm, not a light lotion — a lotion's water evaporates and takes some of the skin's own moisture with it. When to see a doctor
Most holiday sun exposure is managed at home with cool compresses, plain moisturiser and fluids. See a paediatrician promptly if your child has:
- Blistering, or a burn covering a large area of the body
- Fever, chills, vomiting, headache or unusual drowsiness after sun exposure
- Confusion, very fast breathing or refusal to drink — these can point to heat illness, not just sunburn
- Any sunburn at all in a baby under one year
- A burn that's worsening on day two or three, or looks infected (spreading redness, pus, increasing pain)

Is SPF 50 necessary for a beach holiday, or is SPF 40 enough?
SPF 40 applied generously and reapplied every two hours outperforms SPF 50 applied thinly once. SPF measures UVB dose, not duration, and most people apply a third of the tested amount. For a beach day, prioritise a broad-spectrum product with a PA rating, water resistance, and a texture your child will actually let you reapply.
How soon should sunscreen be reapplied after swimming?
Immediately, and always after towelling. Water-resistance claims are tested for 40 or 80 minutes of immersion, and towel-drying strips the film mechanically far faster than water alone. Sand is abrasive too. Make the towel your reminder: dry the child, then reapply before they run back out. On a full beach day this often means every hour.
Does a beach umbrella replace sunscreen for children?
No. An umbrella blocks the direct beam but not the UV scattered across the whole open sky, and sand reflects roughly 15% of UV upward. Under shade a child still receives a real dose from several directions. Use shade to cut the peak, add a full-sleeve rash guard and a cap, and keep sunscreen on exposed skin.
