It's 11pm. The chemist's aisle is running in your head, three tabs open on your phone, and every bottle shouts a different number. SPF 30. SPF 40. SPF 50+. Swimming on Thursday, school sports day next week, and nobody has told you whether the bigger number is actually better or just better marketing.

Short version, then sleep: SPF 30 is the floor, and SPF 40 to 50 is the sensible everyday range for an Indian child. Above 50 you buy almost nothing you can measure. And the number on the front is half the story at best — the PA rating matters more, and so does how much you actually rub in.

What does SPF actually measure?

Sun Protection Factor. It measures one thing: how well a product protects against UVB, the wavelength that burns. It's a ratio. If your child's unprotected skin would start reddening after 10 minutes of Nagpur noon sun, a correctly applied SPF 30 theoretically buys them 300 minutes before the same redness appears.

I say "theoretically" with feeling. That ratio comes out of a lab — flat skin, a precisely weighed film of product, no sweat, no towel, no shirt collar rubbing at it. Real life is a six-year-old wiping her face on her sleeve at the school gate.

Use SPF to compare two bottles. Don't use it as a countdown timer.

Why isn't SPF 50 far better than SPF 30?

Because SPF is a ratio, not a percentage, and ratios are unkind to marketing. Take the fraction of UVB that gets through: 1/30 for SPF 30, 1/50 for SPF 50.

  • SPF 15 lets through 1/15 — it filters about 93%.
  • SPF 30 lets through 1/30 — about 97%.
  • SPF 40 lets through 1/40 — about 97.5%.
  • SPF 50 lets through 1/50 — about 98%.

Fifteen to thirty gains you four percentage points. Thirty to fifty gains you one. Fifty to a hundred, half of one. The line flattens hard, which is precisely why regulators in several countries cap the label at "50+" rather than letting brands print 70 and 90.

Parents find this annoying when they hear it. Fair enough — the packaging works hard to hide it. But it means the honest ranking isn't "SPF 50 beats SPF 30." It's a sunscreen your child tolerates and you apply generously beats a higher number you use sparingly. After a decade of formulating and testing, that's the line I'd defend in any room.

The number most parents skip: PA+++

SPF says nothing about UVA. Nothing. UVA rays are longer. They reach deeper into the dermis, they pass through window glass and cloud, and they're the ones associated with tanning, pigmentation and photoageing. Your child collects a meaningful UVA dose on the school bus, in an auto at a Pune traffic signal, on a grey monsoon afternoon when the sun never once comes out.

In India you'll usually see UVA protection expressed as a PA rating, borrowed from the Japanese standard. PA+ is some protection. PA++ moderate. PA+++ high. PA++++ very high. Some European products print a circled "UVA" logo or say "broad spectrum" instead. All fine — same job, different notation.

If a bottle shouts SPF 50 on the front and has no PA rating, no UVA logo and no "broad spectrum" claim anywhere on the pack, put it back. A high SPF with unknown UVA cover is the most common trap in this aisle. SPF 40 PA+++ is a better product than SPF 50 with silence about UVA.

Why how much you apply beats which number you buy

This is the piece of cosmetic science that should change how you shop. Every SPF number on every bottle in the world comes from one test condition: 2 milligrams of product per square centimetre of skin. That is a thick, visible film. On a child's face it works out to roughly half a teaspoon; a shot-glass measure — around 30 ml — covers a body.

Consumer studies keep finding that people apply somewhere between a quarter and half of that. And because SPF doesn't fall in a straight line with thickness, halving the film doesn't halve the protection. It drops it disproportionately. An SPF 50 spread thin can perform closer to the teens.

So the real question isn't "30, 40 or 50?" It's: will this get applied, properly, on a Tuesday morning when the school van is honking? A lotion your child doesn't fight, that doesn't sting eyes, that doesn't leave a stark white mask over brown skin — that's the one that goes on at 2 mg/cm². Does mineral or chemical change the SPF I should pick?

Not the target number, no. But it changes how a formulator gets there, and that's worth understanding.

Mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on the skin's surface and scatter, absorb and reflect UV. To reach a higher SPF with minerals alone, you increase the percentage of filter. More zinc means a thicker, draggier, whiter cream. Push a mineral formula to SPF 50 and you're usually fighting a visible cast on Indian skin tones. Which is how you end up with a child who squirms and a parent who applies a thin, ineffective layer.

Chemical (organic) filters absorb UV and convert it to heat, and they can hit high numbers in a light, invisible texture. They're widely regulated as safe. Still, on very young, thinner skin, many paediatric dermatologists reach for minerals first — particularly for children with eczema-prone or reactive skin. My read, after sitting with both types on the bench: for kids, a well-formulated mineral sunscreen around SPF 40 with PA+++ is the sweet spot. High enough that the UVB curve has already flattened. Low enough that the zinc load stays cosmetically wearable on brown skin — which is what gets you the full film. What to do tonight

No shopping trip required. Start with what's already on the bathroom shelf.

  • Turn over the bottle you own. Find the PA rating or a broad-spectrum claim. If there isn't one, that bottle is a UVB-only product — plan to replace it.
  • Check the expiry and the period-after-opening symbol. A sunscreen from last summer that's been baking in the car has almost certainly lost potency; the filters and the emulsion both degrade.
  • Measure once, so you learn the amount. Squeeze half a teaspoon into your palm. That's a face and neck. Look at how much it is. You'll never guess low again.
  • Set the morning routine now: moisturiser, then sunscreen as the last step before clothes. Two fingers' length of product down the forearms and calves. Don't skip ears, the back of the neck, or the strip of scalp along a parting.
  • Pack a small tube in the school bag with the child's name on it, and tell the class teacher it's there. Reapplication at lunch is the single most-missed step in the whole routine.
  • After a swim, reapply even if the label says water-resistant. Water-resistant is tested for 40 or 80 minutes, and towelling off removes far more than water does.

One thing I'd gently push back on: the belief that darker Indian skin doesn't need SPF. Melanin gives some baseline protection. It does not prevent UVA-driven pigmentation, tanning, uneven tone or long-term photoageing — and it certainly doesn't prevent sunburn in a child on a Goa beach at 1pm. When to see a doctor

Sunscreen is preventive. It doesn't manage everything the sun does. Speak to your paediatrician or a dermatologist if:

  • Your child has a blistering sunburn, or a burn with fever, chills, headache or vomiting — that's a sign to be seen the same day.
  • Sunscreen consistently causes stinging, redness or a rash, even after you've switched to a mineral formula and patch-tested it.
  • A mole or pigmented patch changes in size, shape, colour or border, or a new one appears and doesn't settle.
  • Your child gets an unusual rash after sun exposure, or seems to sunburn extremely easily — some medications and a few skin conditions raise photosensitivity, and that needs proper assessment.
  • Your child is under six months and you feel you have no option but daily sunscreen. Ask for guidance rather than guessing.

So: 30, 40 or 50? Forty for ordinary life. Fifty for the beach and the hill station. A PA rating either way, no exceptions. And apply twice as much as feels natural — that last instruction is worth more than any number printed on any bottle.
