Why Chlorine Turns Your Child's Hair Dry and Straw-Like

Your child comes back from swimming class, towel over the shoulder. You sit down to comb their hair and it has gone rough and rope-like. The comb stops halfway. There's a small knot at the nape that wasn't there this morning. This isn't drying, not the way a hot afternoon dries a towel. Chlorine is oxidising the thin fatty layer that is chemically bonded to the outside of every strand — and once that layer is gone, the hair surface turns rough, water-attracting and high-friction. The roughness is what your fingers read as straw. The friction is why it knots.

The fibre itself is not falling apart after a few weeks of swimming. I end up saying that to a parent most weeks. This is a surface change, and surface changes respond fast to the right routine. What chlorine does to a single strand

Hair is dead keratin. But the outside of a strand is not a bare protein tube. Every cuticle scale carries one molecular layer of fatty acid — mostly 18-methyleicosanoic acid, 18-MEA — held on by a covalent bond. One molecule thick, and it does an enormous amount of work. It's why virgin hair repels water, why a comb glides, why a child's hair drops back into place after they've been running.

Free chlorine in a pool exists largely as hypochlorous acid. It's an oxidiser, and it does not care what it oxidises. It cleaves that thioester bond and takes the 18-MEA off. What sits underneath is raw, protein-rich keratin, and keratin is hydrophilic. It loves water. So the hair now soaks up pool water instead of shedding it. It swells more. It dries slower.

There's a second layer to this. Keratin is held together partly by disulphide bonds between cystine units. Oxidation converts some of those into cysteic acid, which is negatively charged. A cuticle carrying extra negative charge lifts and repels itself instead of lying flat.

Why it feels like straw

Smoothness in hair is a friction measurement. Nothing more romantic than that. Lie the cuticle scales flat with an intact lipid layer on top and the coefficient of friction is low, and we call that silky. Strip the lipid, lift the scales, and friction shoots up in both directions, especially root-to-tip against the grain. Your fingers read that as dryness. It's roughness. Which is also why a child's hair can feel like straw and still be perfectly hydrated — moisture content and surface feel are two different things, and most of us end up chasing the wrong one.

Why it tangles so much more than it used to

A tangle needs two things: fibres that touch, and fibres that grip. Post-pool hair has both. Raised scales catch on neighbouring scales like tiny ratchets, and the hair no longer slides past itself. Add the swelling from water absorption and you have a fibre that is fatter, rougher and temporarily weaker. Then we comb it. Wet, fine comb, top down. That last bit is where most swim-season breakage really comes from. Not the chlorine.

Why some kids get it much worse than others

Four things decide it, and the first is just length. The ends of long hair are the oldest hair on the head and have sat through every single swim — a shoulder-length ponytail on a ten-year-old may be three years old at the tips. Texture comes next. Curly and wavy hair has cuticle lifting at every bend of the spiral, and sebum can't travel down it easily, so it starts out drier. Then frequency: a coaching batch five or six mornings a week never leaves a gap for the hair to recover in. And sun. An outdoor pool at 11am in Nagpur or Chennai is delivering UV photo-oxidation on top of chemical oxidation, and the two together are worse than either alone.

Fine hair shows it sooner as well. Less fibre diameter to hide the surface change.

Is it the chlorine, the sun, or your tap water?

Diagnose before you buy anything, because the fixes aren't interchangeable. On the green question. Chlorine gets blamed for it constantly and it is simply not the culprit. Copper is — from pipes, or from copper-based algaecides. It deposits on hair and oxidises to a green salt. The whole explanation is in why hair goes green after swimming, and why it's copper rather than chlorine.

What to do tonight

Before the pool

Hair can only hold so much water. Saturate it with clean tap water first and there's far less capacity left for the pool water to soak into. Thirty seconds under a tap, until it is genuinely heavy and dripping, not just damp. Then work a coin-sized blob of conditioner or a few drops of coconut oil through mid-lengths and ends, and leave it in. Coconut oil is one of the few oils small and straight-chained enough to penetrate the cortex rather than sit on top, and published cosmetic-science work has shown it reduces protein loss from hair. That makes it a real pre-swim layer, not a folk remedy. Cap goes on over the top. A cap never seals — it buys you less contact time, and the pre-wet plus conditioner underneath is what does the actual work. Within a minute of getting out

Sixty seconds, and they're the most valuable sixty seconds of the day. Pool water left to dry on the hair concentrates as the water evaporates; the chlorine doesn't leave with it. Plain fresh water at the poolside shower, no product, head tipped back so it runs root to tip. That rinse beats anything you can buy in a bottle.

The actual wash at home

One shampoo pass. Lukewarm water, never hot, because heat lifts the cuticle further. Lather on the scalp only and let the run-off clean the lengths. The lengths don't need scrubbing and they're the damaged part. On the label, look for a mild, sulphate-light surfactant system and a pH-balanced formula, with no strong daily chelators. Conditioner is not optional on a swim day

This is the bit that surprises parents. Conditioners work through cationic ingredients — behentrimonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride — paired with fatty alcohols like cetearyl alcohol. They carry a positive charge. Chlorine-damaged hair, as we saw, has picked up extra negatively charged sites. Opposite charges attract, so the conditioner deposits preferentially exactly where the damage is. Damaged swim hair takes conditioner better than healthy hair does. That's why a child who swims daily can feel dramatically better after one proper conditioning, and why skipping it on a swim day is the mistake I see most often.

Be honest with yourself about what it's doing, though. It lubricates and re-coats a surface, standing in for the 18-MEA that's gone. It doesn't repair a bond. That's fine. A smooth, low-friction surface is the whole goal.

  • Soak hair with clean water for 30 seconds before the pool, until it is dripping.
  • Coin-sized conditioner or 4-5 drops of coconut oil through mid-lengths and ends. Leave in. Cap on.
  • Fresh-water rinse within one minute of getting out, before the towel.
  • One shampoo pass at home, lukewarm, scalp only.
  • Conditioner from ear-level down, leave 2 minutes, rinse with cool water.
  • Detangle while the conditioner is still in: four sections, wide-tooth comb, start at the ends and work up.
  • Squeeze dry in a cotton t-shirt. No terry-towel rubbing, no twisting.
  • Never tie or braid hair that is still damp — swollen fibre plus tension is how ends snap.
Keep a 100 ml bottle of conditioner in the swim bag, not the bathroom. The pre-swim application is the step that gets skipped, and it only gets skipped because the bottle is in the wrong room.

What doesn't work

Lemon juice rinses: acidic, sun-reactive, and a bad idea on a child's scalp in Indian sun. Daily vinegar rinses are overkill — an occasional acidic rinse can help flatten the cuticle, but daily use on already-oxidised hair isn't helping anyone. Baking soda is strongly alkaline and swells the fibre further, which is precisely the opposite of what you want. Tomato ketchup for green hair is a weak acid doing a copper chelator's job badly. And cutting the hair short removes the evidence, not the cause; if the routine doesn't change, the new length goes the same way inside a season. How long until it feels normal again?

Surface feel improves within one or two properly conditioned washes. That's a coating effect, real but not repair. The oxidised portion of the fibre doesn't come back. Scalp hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, so damaged mid-lengths take the better part of a year to grow out, and trimming the worst ends does more for how recovered the hair feels than any treatment will. Hair changes are cosmetic. Scalp changes are not — persistent itching, flaking, redness, sores or hair coming out in patches are not chlorine roughness and should be looked at.

When to see a doctor

Book a paediatrician or dermatologist if the scalp stays red, itchy or flaking for more than a week after swimming stops. Go too for any open, weeping or crusted areas, for noticeable thinning or a bald patch, for burning or stinging when water touches the skin, or for ears that come back swollen, painful or discharging after sessions. Sudden shedding after a fever or an illness is a separate issue with its own timeline, and it needs a proper consultation rather than a change of shampoo.

Should my child wash their hair every single day if they swim daily?

Rinse with plain fresh water after every swim without fail. A full shampoo every day is usually too much for a child with dry or textured hair. Most daily swimmers do well with a mild shampoo on swim days and conditioner every single time, keeping a clarifying or chelating wash to once a week. Watch the scalp and adjust.

Do swim caps stop chlorine damage?

They reduce it, they never seal it. Water gets in around the edges and the hair still sits in chlorinated water, just less of it and for less time. A cap works far better when the hair underneath has been soaked with clean tap water and coated with conditioner or coconut oil first. The cap holds that layer in place.

Why does my child's hair tangle badly only after swimming?

Tangling is a friction problem. Chlorine lifts the cuticle scales and removes the lipid layer that lets strands slide past each other, so fibres catch and grip. Wet hair also swells and is temporarily weaker. Combing it from the roots down at that moment is what turns a tangle into breakage, which is why you detangle from the ends up with conditioner still in.

Is coconut oil before swimming actually useful or is it just tradition?

Both, and the science holds up. Coconut oil is small and straight-chained enough to penetrate into the cortex rather than just sitting on the surface, and published cosmetic-science work has shown it reduces protein loss from hair. Four or five drops through mid-lengths and ends before the cap goes on, on hair already soaked with clean water, is a genuinely effective pre-swim step.

Can chlorine-damaged hair be repaired?

The oxidised part cannot be chemically restored. What conditioners do is re-coat the fibre and lower friction, standing in for the lipid layer that has gone, and that makes hair feel and behave far better immediately.
