Same shampoo, same child. But since you moved flats, her hair dries stiff, the comb snags halfway down, and by the time she reaches school the crown has gone fluffy. Nothing in your bathroom changed. The water did.
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, and those minerals leave a fine, invisible film on hair. The film roughens the cuticle. Hair goes dull, catches on itself, and snaps mid-shaft when a comb is pulled through it. Across Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, how hard your water is depends less on the city than on which tap your bathroom is fed from — treated river supply is usually far softer than borewell or tanker water, and plenty of buildings run on both. The pipe isn't yours to fix. The surfactant, the conditioner and the last thirty seconds of the bath are.

Why does hard water make a child's hair dull and tangly?
Two things happen at once, and only one of them is about the hair.
Start with the chemistry in the mug. Calcium and magnesium ions react with the fatty acids in true soap and form an insoluble salt — the scum you see as a grey ring on the bucket, or as white crust around the tap. That scum doesn't rinse away cleanly. It settles on the hair fibre and on the scalp. It is why a handmade natural soap bar that behaves beautifully in Cauvery-fed water leaves hair squeaky-rough in a Whitefield borewell flat. Modern syndet shampoos, built on milder surfactants like cocamidopropyl betaine, decyl glucoside or sodium cocoyl isethionate, are much less bothered by hardness. They were engineered that way.
Then the mechanical half. Mineral deposit raises friction between hair fibres, so the comb needs more force — and more force on a child's finer, smaller-diameter hair means more breakage, along the shaft rather than at the root. Now add what every parent does when hard water refuses to lather: more shampoo, harder scrubbing, a second go at the ends. The wash leaves the hair rougher than it found it.
The honest version is this. Hard water is a cosmetic and mechanical problem, not a scalp disease. It will not make your child go bald. It will make her hair look lifeless, tangle twice as fast, and leave broken ends on the pillow — which looks alarming at 6am and gets blamed on "hair fall".
Is it the city, or is it your building?
Ask ten parents in one pin code and you'll get ten answers, because they are bathing in ten different waters. Supply lines, borewells and summer tankers all feed the same neighbourhood — sometimes the same block. The shape of it, roughly:

How do I know if my water is hard?
No lab needed. Look for these:
- White crust around the tap mouth, shower head or geyser inlet.
- A chalky ring inside the bucket, or on the steel tumbler you use for the last rinse.
- Soap that refuses to lather, and a slippery film on your own hands that never quite rinses off.
- Towels and school socks that dry stiff, however much detergent went in.
- White spots on steel vessels once they air-dry.
A strip of total-hardness test paper from an aquarium or pool-supply shop costs very little and gives you a number in ten seconds. Your RWA or builder may also be sitting on a recent water test report. Worth asking for it.
The hard-water hair routine, step by step
This is the wash I'd give a 7-year-old with shoulder-length hair in a borewell-fed flat. It takes about four minutes longer than what you do now.
- Oil lightly, 20-30 minutes before the bath. A teaspoon of coconut oil warmed between your palms and worked along the lengths — not flooded onto the scalp. It cuts how much water the fibre swallows during the wash, so less swelling and less roughening.
- Wet the hair properly first — a full 30 seconds. Minerals interfere with how water spreads, so hard water wets hair slowly. Rush this and the shampoo will not foam.
- Dilute the shampoo in a mug. Don't squeeze it neat onto her head. A coin-sized amount into half a mug of water. In hard water that one change often halves how much product you get through.
- Shampoo the scalp only. Fingertips, not nails, 30-40 seconds. The lengths get cleaned by the rinse running down them. Scrubbing the ends is where most avoidable breakage comes from.
- Rinse longer than feels necessary. Count to sixty. Mineral-surfactant residue clings, and under-rinsing is the commonest mistake in hard water.
- Conditioner on mid-lengths to ends, left on a full minute. This is the step that undoes the friction. Never on the scalp for a young child — you'll only get limp roots.
- Final rinse with stored filtered or RO water. One mug, poured slowly from crown to ends while she tips her head back. Thirty seconds, and it earns more than anything else on this list.
- Squeeze, don't rub. A cotton t-shirt or an old soft dupatta beats a terry towel — less cuticle lifting, less frizz.
- Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, while the conditioner is still in or the hair is damp-not-wet. Small sections. Hold the length above where you're combing so the tugs don't reach her scalp.
- Let it dry loose before tying. Tying wet hair in a hard-water home compounds the damage — the reason we wrote about why you should never braid a child's damp hair.
What to look for on the shampoo label
Start with the chelator. On an Indian label it reads as disodium EDTA, sodium phytate, sodium gluconate, trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate, or plain citric acid. Chelators grab calcium and magnesium ions and hold them in solution, so the minerals can't settle on the fibre. They sit near the bottom of the ingredient list at fractions of a percent, and they are the difference between a shampoo that works in Nagpur and one that works in Chennai.
Then read the surfactant system. Amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants — cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside — tolerate hardness far better than soap does, and they are also what makes a mild, low-sting wash possible for a child who won't keep her eyes shut. Why conditioner stops being optional
In soft water you can skip it and get away with it. In hard water you can't, and the reason is electrostatic. A weathered cuticle carries a negative surface charge. Conditioning agents such as behentrimonium chloride or cetrimonium chloride carry a positive one, so they land exactly on the roughest, most damaged patches and lie down there. Paired with fatty alcohols like cetearyl alcohol, they cut the force needed to pull a comb through by a great deal. At 7:40am, with the school van already outside, that is the whole ball game. A slightly acidic formula helps as well, encouraging the cuticle scales to lie flat.
So that is the label checklist: a cationic conditioning agent, a fatty alcohol to pair with it, and a slightly acidic pH. Do shower filters and softeners actually work?
A proper ion-exchange water softener plumbed into the inlet does soften water — it swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium. It also costs real money, needs salt refills, and is a building-level decision, not a bathroom one.
The screw-on shower-head "filters" sold with ceramic balls or vitamin C cartridges are another matter. Most reduce chlorine and sediment, not hardness, and at full flow the water touches them for a second or two. I wouldn't spend on one for this problem. The mug of stored RO or filtered water at the end costs nothing, uses maybe a litre, and does most of the visible work, because the last water touching the hair decides what dries onto it.
Season by season in these four cities
Hard water is the constant. Everything around it moves. Delhi's dry winter strips whatever moisture survives the wash, so October to February is conditioner-every-time season. Hyderabad and Delhi both lean harder on tankers through peak summer, and tanker water is usually the hardest your building will see all year. When to see a doctor
Book a paediatrician or dermatologist if you see a coin-shaped patch of hair loss, black dots or broken stubble on the scalp, itching that keeps her awake, thick yellow or greasy scaling, sores, oozing or tenderness, swollen glands behind the ears or at the neck, or diffuse thinning that carries on past six to eight weeks. Sudden shedding that follows a high fever or an illness is also worth showing a doctor rather than judging at home. Water quality is never the explanation for any of these.

Frequently asked questions
Does hard water cause hair fall in children?
Not from the root, in any meaningful way. What parents see on the pillow and in the comb is usually breakage along the shaft, caused by mineral deposit raising friction so the comb needs more force. It looks like hair fall because the broken pieces are long. Conditioning and gentler detangling reduce it within a couple of weeks. Patchy loss is a different problem — see a doctor.
Is borewell water harder than Cauvery or Metrowater supply?
Usually, yes. Treated river supply in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and much of Delhi tends to be softer than local groundwater, and summer tanker water is often the hardest your building sees all year. Many buildings mix sources, so hardness can differ between your kitchen and your bathroom tap. A hardness test strip settles it in ten seconds.
Can I wash my child's hair with RO water?
You don't need to wash the whole head with it — that wastes a lot of water for little extra benefit. Use ordinary tap water for wetting, shampooing and the main rinse, then pour one mug of stored RO or filtered water slowly over the hair as the last step. The final water that touches hair decides what dries onto it.
Do shower filters soften hard water?
Most don't. Screw-on shower filters with ceramic balls or vitamin C cartridges mainly address chlorine and sediment, and water passes through them in about a second at full flow — too fast to remove calcium meaningfully. A plumbed-in ion-exchange softener genuinely works but is a building-level expense. The stored-water final rinse gives you most of the visible result for free.
How often should I shampoo my child's hair in a hard-water home?
Two to three times a week suits most school-age children. Every wash in hard water deposits some mineral, so more washes mean more deposit, not cleaner hair. On sweaty in-between days, rinse the scalp with plain water and condition the ends. Children doing daily sport or swimming will need more — pair those washes with conditioner every single time.
Is a lemon or vinegar rinse safe for kids' hair?
A heavily diluted acidic rinse can help the cuticle lie flatter, but it's fiddly and risky around a child's eyes, and undiluted lemon juice on the scalp can sting or irritate. A well-formulated conditioner is already slightly acidic and does the same job more reliably, with slip that makes detangling easier. For children, I'd choose the conditioner every time.
